I'm not gonna cover Trackmania 1 because that's an even bigger mess with more "editions" and revisions than Street Fighter 2. That's the whole of Trackmania right now. This year they're taking that environment and folding it back into the Trackmania 2 platform as the fourth environment.

It's a new unique environment but the entire game is separate from the TM2 "platform", and the whole thing is consolized including features and menus (no mods or server browsers). Trackmania Turbo is a completely separate product, has nothing to do with Trackmania 2. Nadeo sells each environment separately, they have 3 environments for TM2 with a fourth one coming out soon. Each environment for Trackmania 2 is very well developed and can easily stand as a game of its own. The whole "game" is split into "environments" consisting of a unique theme, car type with its own physics, its own track set with a bunch of unique track gimmicks. For someone who's never played these games, I would say the point of entry is anything from Trackmania 2. Trackmania is an arcade racer with funky physics and a really robust track editor. I think it's generally why they have a hard time attracting new customers: their messaging is a dumpster fire. It's not terrible but Nadeo generally does a pretty poor job of explaining it to non-fans. It's like they hired a UX designer to come up with something that looks "good" in an academic flat-UI sense without working on the interactivity that works well for games.ĮDIT: I guess I can look forward to Lagoon being folded into TM2? Although there's no guarantee they won't fuck with the physics on that either. You used to get these really weighty-sounding "bell" dings every time you got a new medal, that's completely gone since they just silently drift into view now. A small change that ends up being a big detriment is how unsatisfying getting medals. There's hints of good design here and there but there's tons of jank everywhere and there's some really bone-headed changes. Not to mention the new Maniaplanet UI is awful. How is this even going to work for Nadeo's tracks for Canyon for single-player? Are some of them going to be unbeatable or really hard to beat now that those tracks were designed for a physics engine that isn't in the game anymore?

But with this incredibly stupid update I'm unlikely to buy Canyon at all. Overall: A GREAT game that with a few tweaks could even be much better. What the fuck? After the news of the new Maniaplanet update hit I jumped back into TM2 Stadium and heavily considered buying Canyon and Valley since I never got around to playing them. From C on they get to be 2 lane high speed runs where you really need near perfect runs too many times. (ok, I'll calm down - it only took my an hour to do) The A and B tracks (White / Blue?) are the funnest. Uh, the top ten list of that track for my state has 7 blank entries (since it's so hard, virtually no one can do it) yet I barely get any Skill Points !? I'm #3 out of ~ 450 players in my state on that track and < 100 points. So I record a time - still beat the Gold Medal time and get a stinking 50-80 Skill Points. Waiting 5 minutes before a subsequent Official Timed run is frustrating when some tracks are only 30 seconds - No HUD / map.learning the track the first time through takes many crashes - Having to first earn a Gold Medal before being able to record an Official Time - Some tracks I'm one of ONLY 3 people in our entire state (!!!) to get a Gold Medal and thus be able to record an official time. Cons: - Some tracks are just flat-out hard to get a gold medal in, and thus you can't record an "official time" - The menus/navigation are certainly worse than TrackMania United. Which to me, are the funnest and what I think this game should be more of. (For the longest time I had no idea you could select more than 1 !) - Has some multi-lap tracks. Pros: - Graphics - much improved over TrackMania United (which I still think is pretty good) - The car control is great (yet sometimes quirky, but it's kinda consistently quirky so you learn to compensate) - "Racing against" the ghost runs of multiple players. But this is your typical TrackMania game but with a single car/track type. I certainly can't complain much since I did sink almost 30hrs into it, but some of those were some aggravating hours. 29h PlayedThis is an excellent (yet frustrating) game.
